Mumbai, July 11: A 21-year-old youth committed suicide by shooting himself with the service revolver of his father - a senior police inspector of the crime branch - in Tilak Nagar, Chembur, yesterday.
According to police, had sent some messages to his friends on Tuesday night claiming it to be his last day. His status on Whatsapp messenger also proclaimed that he would be leaving this world soon.
Arvind Sawant, the youth’s father, is a senior inspector of police in Unit III of the Mumbai Crime Branch. Tejas committed suicide around 7 am at his residence in building number 108, Tilak Nagar Colony, Chembur.
"When Tejas’s mother got up around 7.30 am to close the window as it was raining heavily, she saw Tejas in a pool of blood and immediately informed her husband who was sleeping in the master bedroom. He, along with a neighbour and watchman, rushed Tejas to Rajawadi Hospital where he was declared dead," said Assistant Commissioner of Police Shridhar Dhage of Deonar Division.
Arvind Sawant, who was earlier with the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), has worked on several sensitive cases including the attack on 26/11. Sawant had dinner with his family on Tuesday night and went to bed around 11.30 pm. He went to sleep in the master bedroom, his 20-year-old daughter - a student of Ruparel College - slept with her mother in another bedroom. Tejas, who had recently cleared SYBSc slept alone in hall.
Arvind Sawant’s service revolver was kept near his pillow. According to him, around 7 am he heard a dull thudding noise but thought that it was due to the rain. Only when his wife got up to close the window, they realised that something was wrong.
"The family was well settled and there was no reason for Tejas to have committed suicide. He had sent messages to some friends but everybody took it lightly. His Whatsapp status showed, ’One Day You Will Miss Me As I Will Be No More In The World,’ but nobody took it seriously. Tejas was supposed to take admission in TYBSc yesterday," said a police officer.
"Tejas shot himself on his right temple. The bullet came out from the left side and hit the glass window. Every police officer keeps his service revolver at home very casually but now we should think over it," said a police officer from Tilak Nagar police station. The police suspect that primary reason behind Tejas’s suicide might be a love affair gone wrong but are open to investigations from all angles. The police have registered an accidental death case.
