Bhopal, Jul 16, 2021: At least four people were killed after several villagers fell into a well while trying to rescue a girl who had fallen into it in Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.

The incident took place at Ganj Basoda, about 50 km from the district headquarters. According to locals, the well is around 50-ft deep with a water level of about 20 feet.
As per the latest information on Friday, four bodies have been found and more than 15 people rescued. As many as 13 people are still missing, police said, and added that rescue operations are underway in Vidisha.
Vidisha Guardian Minister Vishwas Sarang, who rushed to the spot late Thursday night following Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s direction, told ANI on Friday morning, “Operation continues at Ganjbasoda, Vidisha. 19 people rescued. 3 bodies recovered. NDRF & SDRF are also here. The land here is prone to subsidence. It’s happening again & again. It’ll be difficult to say the exact toll until the operation concludes."
A girl fell into the well around 6 pm and some people climbed down to rescue her while others were standing on the parapet wall around it to help them, a police official said.
The wall suddenly crashed, throwing those standing on it into the water, he said, and added that several
of them were feared trapped under the rubble.
Around 11 pm, a tractor engaged in the rescue operation, along with four policemen, skidded into the well when the area around it caved in, eyewitnesses said.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the rescue operation is on. "An SDRF team left for the spot with all necessary equipment for the rescue operation. The Commissioner and IG too have left for the incident site. I am continuously taking stock of the situation and in live contact," the Madhya Pradesh CM said.Speaking to the media, the Madhya Pradesh CM said teams of the National Disaster Management Force and State Disaster Management Force are carrying out the rescue operation in Vidisha.
The Madhya Pradesh government, meanwhile, announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of those who died in the Vidisha incident. The MP CM also announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to those injured. The injured will also be provided free medical treatment, the state government announced.
In a similar incident, four people drowned in a pond in Tamil Nadu earlier this week while trying to rescue one of the kids who fell into the water.
The incident took place at the Angalamman temple pond in Pudhu Gummidipundi village of Tamil Nadu.
A 14-year-old had gone along with her friends to wash clothes at the Angalamman temple pond when she slipped into the deep side of the pond.
Her friends tried to rescue her and jumped into the pond, but all four had drowned.
