50 taken into custody for black flag demonstration against Gadkari

Mtoday news

Bangalore, Feb 20: Over 50 activists of a Kannada protagonist organisation were taken into custody when they staged a black flag demonstration against BJP President Nitin Gadkari in protest against the party fielding an ’’outsider’’ to contest the March 3 Rajya Sabha by-poll from Karnataka.

The BJP has chosen actress Hema Malini, who will file her nomination papers tomorrow, for the bypoll.

The by-election was necessitated to fill up the vacancy caused by the death of M Rajsekhara Murthy of JD-S.

Activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike staged the protest in front of Bengaluru International Airport when Gadkari arrived here to participate in a rally organised by BJP.
The rally is being held to mark the completion of 1000 days in office of the first BJP government in the South.

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa had yesterday welcomed the BJP central leadership’s decision to field her from the state, amid reports that ruling BJP’s Karnataka unit was ignored in selecting Hema Malini to contest the by-poll.

BJP celebrates 1,000 days of rule in Karnataka

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday organized a large rally here to celebrate 1,000 days in power in Karnataka, its first government in south India.

The Congress held another rally in Mysore against alleged corruption and misrule of the ruling party.

Addressing the BJP rally, party president Nitin Gadkari lashed out at the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government in New Delhi saying it had failed on fronts - price, national security, curbing corruption and bringing unaccounted money stashed in foreign banks.

He asserted that BJP was not against any community or religion.

"Ours is not a party built on the basis of caste, religion, language or region," he told thousands of party workers from across Karnataka gathered at the Palace Grounds in north Bangalore.

State party leaders claimed around 250,000 people attended the "thanksgiving for voters, congratulations for the workers" rally for bringing BJP to power in the state in May 2008.
