Chandigarh, May 05, 2022: The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) in Patiala, Punjab, was declared a containment zone after 60 students tested positive for Covid-19. The infected students showed mild symptoms and were kept in isolation in separate blocks.
In a bid to contain the spread of Covid-19 infection, the university authorities were asked to get hostels vacated by May 10.
India has been witnessing a spike in daily Covid-19 cases since the past few weeks, with several cases being reported from schools and colleges across many states.
Recently, 16 students of the Welham Girls’ School in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun tested positive for Covid-19.
Earlier, cases were reported among school students in Delhi, Noida and Gaziabad. Taking note of the situation, authorities issued advisories and asked parents not to panic.
Meanwhile, the Covid-19 cases on the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) campus climbed to over 170. However, the college was not shut down. "The government and authorities are trying their best to ensure that IIT Madras Covid cluster doesn’t spread to other places," Principal Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan had said.
India registered 3,275 new cases in the last 24 hours, 2.2 per cent higher than the tally reported yesterday, the Union health ministry said early Thursday. With fresh cases, the country’s overall caseload has mounted to 4,30,91,393.
The top five states which registered the maximum cases are Delhi with 1,354 cases, followed by Haryana with 571 cases, Kerala with 386 cases, Uttar Pradesh with 198 cases and Maharashtra with 188 cases.
Meanwhile, 55 more deaths were reported in the country in the last 24 hours, taking the total reported deaths due to Covid-19 to 5,23,975.
