Bengaluru, Feb 06, 2015: In a frightening reminder that no place is safe, an eight-year-old girl’s body was found in a shed in a busy industrial area of Hoskote Taluk in Bengaluru Rural, Karnataka on Thursday evening.
The police have released CCTV footage from yesterday afternoon that shows a man coming up to the child, who was playing out in the open. He played with her for a while before leading her into the shed. Some time later, he is seen on the footage coming out buttoning his shirt.
The child’s body was found four hours later by other children. The police say the girl was raped and murdered, and that the official medical report is awaited.
No arrests have been made. The police are examining the CCTV footage to get leads on the identity of the man seen leaving the shed. They said he seemed to be a manual worker.
"This is a busy area and he might have tried to cover the child’s mouth to stop her from screaming and she died because of smothering. He seems to be a labourer. We are questioning one or two suspects," said Bengaluru Rural’s Superintendent of Police, B Ramesh.
There is shock and fear in the area. "We cannot leave our children unattended as they play even for five minutes now," said a woman who lives in the neighbourhood.
Residents said the child’s parents had come from Hubli in north Karnataka in search of work.
