8 dead in shooting at Russia university, video shows students jumping out of window to escape

Moscow, Sep 20, 2021: Russian law enforcement neutralized a gunman who went on a rampage at Perm State University (PSU) in Perm Krai region on Monday morning, killing eight people and injuring at least seven others, RT News reported.

 

According to preliminary reports, an unidentified person opened fire in one of the buildings at PSU. The gunman entered the university around 11 am and was apprehended shortly afterwards.

"Some students locked themselves in universities auditoriums to hide from the attacker. Some students jumped out of the windows. Law enforcement agents are heading to the site," reported Russia’s TASS news agency, citing sources.

Videos shared on social media appear to show an armed person dressed in black and wearing a helmet, slowly walking across the campus.Russia’s Investigative Committee, the agency that handles probes into major crimes, said the gunman had been identified as an 18-year-old student at the university. He was armed with a ‘traumatic’ non-lethal weapon, media reports stated.

Investigative Committee representative Svetlana Petrenko told mediapersons that the shooter was wounded during his arrest. His identity has been established, he has been detained and further investigation is underway, she added.

According to unconfirmed reports, the suspect had previously made posts stating his intentions on social media.

The regional heath ministry said that among those wounded were injuries both from the shooting and from trying to escape the building. One of the wounded is in serious condition, while the others suffered injuries of "moderate severity".

The Indian Embassy in Russia issued a statement expressing condolences over the "horrific attack".

"Shocked at horrific attack at Perm State University in Russia; our deep condolences for loss of life & best wishes for early recovery of those injured. Embassy in touch with local authorities, representatives of Indian students. All Indian students safe," the statement read.
