Chennai: June 01, 2015: Ever since IIT Madras decided to temporarily derecognise an independent student body, Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle, for violating its guidelines Chennai has all but turned into a warzone.
Many student organisations, led by DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India) who blamed the Smriti Irani led HRD ministry for the move, decided to oppose the decision and protests were rampant across Chennai over the weekend.
Among these protests was one involving the members of the student’s group known as Radical Students’ Youth Front and Thanthai Periyar which was staged right outside the institution.
Police was soon called to the spot and they forcibly removed the protesters.
But what makes this police action appalling is the way they treated a young girl who was part of the protest.
The girl was detained and is seen inside a police van with the rest of the protesters.
While we do not support children being put in the midst of any political agitation, we are also against police handling kids with such insensitivity.
Currently, the girl is taking over Facebook where she is being lauded as the youngest anti-Modi campaigner and as a representative of the whopping 67 per cent of Indian public which did not vote for Modi. (The second part being totally absurd as she is far from reaching the voting age. duh!)
