Thiruvanantapuram, Oct 24, 2022: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday slammed the state governor for asking the vice chancellors of nine varsities in the state to tender their resignation. While talking to the media, he said Governor Arif Mohammed Khan was "acting as a tool of the RSS" and misusing his powers.

He further said that the governor’s post is not to move against the government but to uphold the Constitution’s dignity. Speaking on the governor’s directive, he said it was "undemocratic and an encroachment on VCs’ powers".

The chief minister’s remark came just a day after the governor issued a directive asking the vice chancellors to resign.

The nine universities where the vice chancellors have been asked to resign are University of Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi University, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala University of Fisheries & Ocean studies, Kannur University, APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, University of Calicut, and Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University.

The Supreme Court had earlier cancelled the appointment of Dr Rajashree MS as Vice Chancellor of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (KTU). As per the University Grants Commission, the search committee should have recommended a panel of not less than three qualified persons for the post of VC but in Rajashree’s case, only her name was recommended.
