New Delhi, May 6, 2018 (PTI): Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi will address her first election rally for upcoming Karnataka Assembly polls on May 8 at Bijapur. This will UPA chairperson’s first public campaign after two years. Manickam Tagore, Congress secretary in-charge of Karnataka is reportedly keeping an eye over the arrangements at Bijapur. Speaking to reporters about Sonia’s rally, Tagore asserted that Sonia’s rally will motivate cadre and send a strong message to voters.
“The fact that she will address her first election meeting in many years shows how significant Karnataka is for the party,” Hindustan Times quoted Tagore as saying. Reports claim that PM Narendra Modi will also campaign for his party on the same day.
Notably, the former Congress president had skipped campaigning in all Assembly elections after she fell ill during a roadshow in PM Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi on August 2, 2016. Due to delay in the Delhi-bound flight, doctors at the airport were forced to put her on the drip. PM Modi had also offered to send an air ambulance to Varanasi to bring her back to Delhi.
She did not campaign for her party in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, Manipur Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, Karnataka will go to polls on May 12 and the results will be declared three days later on May 15.
