New Delhi, May 14, 2024: Delhi’s Tihar Jail on Tuesday received a bomb threat email amid similar warnings being sent to schools, hospitals and even the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in the city, officials said.
The jail administration has alerted Delhi Police about the threat and searches are being carried out inside the prison that has some high-profile inmates, including key politicians.
Earlier in the day, four hospitals in the national capital received bomb threats on email.
Delhi Fire Service officials said they had received calls of bomb threat emails from the GTB Hospital, Dada Dev Hospital, Hedgewar Hospital, and Deep Chandra Bandhu Hospital.
Nothing suspicious has been found so far, they said.
The bomb disposal squad, bomb detection team, fire department and local police were rushed to these hospitals to conduct searches.
"Police and the bomb disposal squad are conducting the checks. We have also conducted checks twice. Nothing suspicious has been found so far," said V K Sharma, security officer at Hedgewar Hospital.
This is the fourth time in the last one month that various places, including schools, hospitals and airport have received such threats.
As many as 20 hospitals in the capital city received similar threats on May 12 (Sunday). Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) also received a bomb threat email on the same day. However, all these threats turned out to be a hoax.
Bomb threats were also sent to around 100 schools in Delhi, two in Noida and one in Lucknow on May 1, which again turned out to be a hoax. These threats were sent to the schools using a Russian email service.
Even the schools of Jaipur in Rajasthan and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh have received similar threats. At least 37 schools in the pink city received email threats following which students were evacuated and sent home.
Police teams promptly arrived at the scene, along with bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs. However, nothing suspicious was found.
Four schools in Lucknow also received a bomb threat via email. Students were promptly evacuated, and security agencies conducted a thorough check. UP Police later declared the bomb threat a hoax.
