Varanasi, May 22, 2017: A marriage ceremony ended on a jarring note in Cholapur village here after the bride’s father returned the ‘baraat’ accusing the groom’s family of backtracking on the promise of arranging an orchestra.

bride The argument between the parents of the bride and the groom over the petty issue resulted in friends and relatives from both the sides exchanging blows and manhandling each other.

Station officer, Cholapur, Vinay Prakash said the marriage of Manoj Kumar, son of Kamla Prasad of Barwa village in Phoolpur area was fixed with the daughter of Ramsevak of Cholapur village.

During the discussion, it was decided that the groom’s family would arrange for the DJ. The bride’s father, however, mistook DJ to orchestra performances by singers and dancers.

As per the programme, the ‘baarat’ reached Cholapur on Friday evening and was given a warm welcome. Some of the rituals were performed at the ‘janwaasa’ (where arrangements for the stay of guests were made).

After a pre-marriage ritual, while the groom’s friends danced to the tune of DJ, the bride’s father accused the groom’s family of not fulfilling the promise of arranging orchestra for the function.

However, the groom’s father claimed that when the marriage was fixed there was no mention of orchestra. Not convinced, the bride’s father threatened to call off the marriage.

The altercation drew the attention of guests who also joined the argument which resulted in a free-for-all situation.

A resident informed the police which reached to the spot and tried to pacify the two sides. The police advised them to find an amicable solution to the issue but they refused to relent. The ‘baraat’ returned with the promise of taking the matter to panchayat.

A panchayat was called at Cholapur on Saturday where both the sides returned gifts, cash and jewellery they had exchanged earlier.

The Cholapur station officer said both the sides decided not to solemnise the marriage and added that no written complaint was filed in this connection.
