New Delhi, Sep 07, 2016: An all-party resolution has appealed for peace and dialogue to solve the Kashmir crisis, emphasising that there can be no compromise on the issue of national sovereignty.
The unanimous resolution was released today after a three-hour-long meeting in Delhi of parliamentarians from 20 parties who visited Jammu and Kashmir, where over 70 people have died and nearly 10,000 have been injured in violent protests in the last two months.
The resolution asks the central and state government to initiate dialogue with all stakeholders and requests them to ensure the security of citizens and security personnel in the Valley.
The resolution makes no mention of separatists, who this weekend rejected an invitation from Mehbooba Mufti to hold talks with the all-party delegation. They had also snubbed individual MPs who attempted to talk to them.
At the meeting today, sources said, not a single national opposition party accused Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s government in Jammu and Kashmir of failing to handle the Kashmir unrest, which began on July 8 after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani.
Attacks on the state government came, the sources said, only in memorandums from Kashmir-based opposition parties and groups. Hundreds of such memorandums and differing views of MPs were collated by the government in a summary that was placed before the MPs today.
The compilation was presented with the caveat that this was not the view of the centre or the Home Ministry.
At the meeting, parties appealed that steps be taken to reopen schools and other institutions in Kashmir, said union minister Jitendra Singh, stating that the government is open to discussion with all.
Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said his party has sought that "normalcy be restored in the state" and that the Centre must consult political parties in the state.
The Left’s Sitaram Yechury stressed on confidence building measures and said his party sought that pellet guns, which have injured many, be replaced.
Rajnath Singh had briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday on the MPs’ visit and will meet President Pranab Mukherjee this evening.
