Chandigarh, Mar 29, 2023: Khalistani separatist Amritpal Singh and his aide Papalpreet Singh once again slipped through police’s fingers even as the search operation continued in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district on late Tuesday evening. The police have managed to detain two people who were with the Khalistani separatist while they were escaping.
The police said they were chasing a white coloured Innova car, which was coming from Phagwara to Hoshiarpur, on suspicion that Amritpal Singh and his aides were present inside the vehicle. The car ran past a police checkpost before stopping at a gurdwara in Mehtiana.
The accused left the car near the gurdwara and ran away, according to Hoshiarpur’s CID unit.
Besides Papalpeet Singh, one more aide of Amritpal Singh managed to escape with him. However, police detained two of his aides in the search operation.
The two detained individuals were following the Innova car. Both are originally from Punjab but were living in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh, as per police.
Punjab Police has launched a search operation in the nearby areas. The search operation was underway at the time of filing of this report.
Since the beginning of police crackdown against Amritpal Singh, several images and videos of the radical preacher have surfaced on social media. A few hours ago, new CCTV footage emerged showing Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh walking in East Delhi’s Madhu Vihar on March 21. He was seen without the turban.
Sources in the Punjab Police and intelligence agencies have confirmed to India Today that the man seen in the footage is in fact Amrtipal Singh, and the one who was following him is his close aide Papalpreet Singh.
The police crackdown on Amritpal Singh and his outfit ’Waris Punjab De’ began on March 18, weeks after he and his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station near Amritsar to secure the release of an arrested man.
However, Amritpal Singh managed to dodge the crackdown in Jalandhar and escaped in different vehicles by changing his appearance multiple times, as per police.
Punjab Police have arrested or detained a number of his associates under criminal cases related to spreading disharmony, attempt to murder and attack, police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge duty by public servants. They have slapped the stringent National Security Act against some of them.
Meanwhile, Nepal on Monday put fugitive Amritpal Singh on its surveillance list after India requested it not to allow him to flee to a third country and arrest him if he attempts to escape using an Indian passport or any other fake passport.
