Another Karnataka teacher suspended for allowing girl to wear hijab during exam in Kalaburagi

Mangalore Today News Network

Kalaburagi, Mar 31, 2022: A teacher in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi district was allegedly suspended for allowing a girl student to wear hijab during an exam on Thursday. This is the second such incident reported in two days.

Karnataka Hijab Row

On Wednesday, seven teachers in the Gadag district were suspended for allowing girl students to wear the hijab as they appeared for the SSLC exams.

In the Kalaburagi district case, an inquiry has been initiated to probe the matter.

The hijab row took center stage in Karnataka in early January this year. Statewide protests were held over girls wearing hijab at educational institutions.

On March 15, Karnataka High Court’s three-judge bench dismissed all the petitions challenging the ban on hijab inside Karnataka schools.

The court ruled that wearing hijabs does not fall under the essential practice of Islam. It also observed that the restrictions on wearing of uniforms were reasonable and that the students cannot oppose it.

Now, reports have emerged that claim that as many as eight teachers -- seven in Gadag district and one in Kalaburagi district -- were suspended for allowing girls to wear hijab during exams at schools.
