Imphal, Aug 10, 2023: Another gangrape incident in Manipur came to light after an FIR was filed on Wednesday. A 37-year-old woman complained that she was gang-raped by Kuki men while she was trying to flee from her home in Churachandpur when the ethnic clashes broke out on May 3.
“We ran as fast as we could to escape from the mob," the woman said in her police complaint.
According to her statement to the police, around 6:30 PM on May 3, a group of Kuki miscreants set fire to several houses, including the woman’s. Amid the chaos, she attempted to flee with her niece and two sons, accompanied by her sister-in-law. However, after running for about half a kilometre, she stumbled and fell. While her sister-in-law ran with the children to safety, the woman was stopped by five-six of the miscreants.
Despite her efforts to resist, she was physically attacked and then subjected to brutal sexual assault.
"There was no help from anybody despite my cries. Thereafter, some more kuki miscreants again joined them. At that time, I lost consciousness. Later, when I regained consciousness, I found myself in a house surrounded by some Meitei people," the woman said in her statement.
The FIR was lodged on Wednesday with the Women’s Police Station in Bishnupur and has been forwarded to Churachandpur Police Station for further investigation. A medical examination of the victim was conducted following the FIR. The woman is now living in a relief camp for internally displaced people.
