New Delhi, Nov 20, 2021: Members of the Congress’s youth wing have filed a police complaint against Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut for making "seditious statements" against India on social media.
The complainants are Indian Youth Congress (IYC) National Secretary Advocate Amrish Ranjan Pandey and Advocate Ambuj Dixit, National Co-Coordinator, Legal Cell, IYC.
In their complaint, the IYC members claimed that on Friday, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the government has decided to repeal the three farm laws, Kangana Ranaut put up Instagram stories calling India a “Jihadist Nation” and "openly calling for a dictatorship in India".
"Kangana Ranaut is a renowned actress and has a huge fan following of more than 7.8 million people on Instagram. Therefore, her intentional, irresponsible and seditious posts have the ability to excite hatred, contempt and disaffection towards the republic of India," the complaint, which was filed at Delhi’s Parliament Street Police Station, read.
"While we firmly believe in free speech, the same cannot go beyond a reasonable limit. While criticism of a government or public functionary may be questioned by any citizen of India, one cannot be allowed to make remarks inciting public mischief and disaffection towards the nation," it added. The complainants have asked the police to register a case against Kangana Ranaut under Sections 124-A, 504 and 505 of the Indian Penal Code. The police are yet to take any action.
Recently, Kangana Ranaut stoked a controversy when she claimed that India attained freedom in 2014 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power and described the country’s independence in 1947 as ’handed over’ by the British.
She also invited criticism for her remark against Mahatma Gandhi where she mocked his mantra of ahimsa, saying that offering another cheek gets you "bheek" not freedom.
