Mumbai, Oct 31, 2017 : The Army will help build a new foot overbridge at the Elphinstone Road station, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said as Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal visited the station, a month after the tragic stampede on the station’s foot over bridge.
"We are taking the Army’s help in building a new FOB at the Elphinstone Road station and at two other suburban train stations in Mumbai," Fadnavis told reporters at the venue.
"I have been informed that the work on these bridges will be completed by January 31," he said.
The Defence Minister said that this was probably the first time the Army was asked to come in to build what could otherwise be called civil work, but the Elphinstone tragedy was that big.
She added, "A call was taken to cooperate seeing the urgency of the matter as the Army has its role at the borders."

23 people died on September 29 after they were crushed under the pile of the weight of their fellow commuters as they took shelter under a narrow foot-over bridge connecting the Elphinstone Road and Parel railway stations, waiting for the rains to subside.
After the stampede, railway officials posted police personnel to manage the crowd on busy platforms, evicted hawkers from suburban train stations and started speeding up infrastructure projects on suburban network.
