Guangzhou, November 13: Srinivasa Rao Balluri won India’s first gold medal at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou on the first day of the competition on Saturday.
Balluri won the men’s 56 kg weightlifting event while his compatriot Sukhen Dey won the silver in the same event.
In shooting, Gagan Narang won the silver medal in the 10m air ifle individual shooting event.
Earlier, Narang had opened its Asian Games medal account along with Abhinav Bindra and Sanjeev Rajput clinching the silver in the 10m air rifle team event.
Narang, Bindra and Rajput combined for a score of 1783, a point adrift of gold medal winning Chinese team comprising Jikang Yu, Qinan Zhu and Yifei Cao.
Korea settled for the bronze in this event.
While Narang shot a score 597, Bindra and Rajput managed identical tallies of 593.
Disappointment, however, was in store for India in other events as the women’s 10m air rifle team finished seventh and men’s 50m pistol team could manage only a fifth place finish.
