Jorhat, Sep 08, 2021: One person died and over 50 people are reportedly missing as a large boat capsized in the Brahmaputra river after colliding with a ferry near Nimati Ghat in Assam’s Jorhat district on Wednesday.
The collision occurred when the private boat ’Ma Kamala’ was headed to Majuli from Nimati Ghat and the government-owned ferry ’Tripkai’ was coming from Majuli, reports said.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa expressed concerns over the boat accident and directed the District Administration of Majuli and Jorhat districts to carry out rescue operations expeditiously with the help of NDRF and SDRF.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted over the incident and said all possible efforts are being made to rescue the passengers. "Saddened by the boat accident in Assam. All possible efforts are being made to rescue the passengers. I pray for everyone’s safety and well-being," PM Modi’s tweet read.

The boats were carrying around 120 people when the accident took place."The boat Ma Kamala capsized and then sank. We do not have much detail at this moment," an official of the Inland Water Transport (IWT) Department said.
As per available information, 42 people have been rescued so far.
A senior official of Jorhat district administration said that they cannot say right now how many people have died in the accident.
