Assam: 7 minor blasts by ULFA-I on Republic Day, no casualty

Guwahati, Jan 26, 2017; A series of 7 minor blasts were carried out by the banned United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) on Thursday morning ahead of Republic Day celebrations. No one was injured or killed in the blasts.

 

According to the police, the blasts took place one after another around 8am in three different locations of Charaideo and Dibrugarh districts in upper Assam.

Three of the blasts took place at Nazira and Sonari in Charaideo district while the fourth took place at Chowkidingee in Dibrugarh. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are believed to have been used in all the blasts.

Police teams have been rushed to the spots.

Prior to the blasts, ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah called some television news channels and warned of carrying out attacks as a mark of protest against Republic Day celebrations.

Baruah, who is suspected to be hiding in Myanmar, had appealed to the public not to attend the celebrations and stay away from public places.

In the past, separatists have marked the day by attacking security forces or the celebrations themselves.
