Assembly elections: BJP to retain Arunachal Pradesh, SKM set for Sikkim sweep

New Delhi, June 2, 2024: The counting of votes polled for the 32-member Sikkim Assembly and 50 seats of the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly is underway on Sunday. The BJP is likely to retain Arunachal Pradesh, while the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) is all set for a second term in the northeastern state.

Voting was held for 60 assembly seats in Arunachal Pradesh and 32 assembly seats in Sikkim on April 19. Leads for all seats in both northeastern states are in.

In Arunachal Pradesh, results will be declared today for just 50 seats, with Chief Minister Pema Khandu eyeing a third term. The ruling BJP has already won ten assembly seats unopposed. The BJP has put up candidates for all 60 seats of the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly, while the Congress is contesting on 34 seats.

The Sikkim Assembly has 32 seats. To form the government, a party or coalition will need at least 17 seats. Chief Minister PS Tamang has said he is confident that the people of Sikkim will give another term to the party. In 2019, the SKM had ended the 25-year rule of the SDF by winning 17 seats against 15 of Pawan Chamling’s party.
