Delhi, 3 June 2016: IN A joint operation, the Department of Health and Department of Women and Child Welfare on Thursday conducted a surprise check at a private clinic in Sector 15 and arrested a BAMS doctor for allegedly selling MTP kits to women.
The accused doctor was identified as Dr Aruna, a resident of House no. 7, Sector 15, Panchkula. The department had received a tip-off that she was illegally selling MTP kits to pregnant women from her clinic, Family Clinic, Sector 15. A team consisting of Deputy Civil Surgeon Saroj Aggarwal, District Project Officer, Department of Women and Child Welfare, Baljit Kaur and Inspector Neha Chauhan was constituted which raided the clinic.A woman was sent as a decoy customer to her residence-cum-clinic for seeking help for terminating her pregnancy. “The accused doctor gave her an MTP kit for Rs 800, and was caught her red-handed with the cash,” said Kaur.
The accused claimed to be a BAMS doctor, but failed to show any degree substantiating her claim. The MTP kit consists of a combination of two drugs, Misoprostol and Mifepristone, which are used for medical abortion/termination of pregnancy.
As per the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), Act, 1971, the termination of pregnancy by a person can only be done by a registered medical practitioner. Otherwise, it is an offence punishable with rigorous imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than two years but which may extend to seven years.
