June 22, 2019: BJP MLA from Hyderabad’s Goshamahal, T Raja Singh on Thursday accused the police of assaulting him when he tried to erect a statue of freedom fighter Rani Avanti Bai Lodh in Jummerat Bazar.
The police, however, denied the charge and released video footage which purportedly shows Raja Singh hitting his head with what looked like a stone.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) A R Srinivas said that the BJP MLA inflicted the injury on himself with a stone. `"Raja Singh assaulted policemen who had gone there to maintain law and order. He abused cops and entered into a scuffle with them. The municipal corporation had not given permission to Raja Singh to erect the statue so police had to prevent him, " DCP Srinivas said.
Singh claimed that Rani Avanti Bai Lodh’s statue had been vandalised earlier and the police intervened saying he did not have permission when the BJP MLA and his supporters tried to erect a new statue.
He also claimed the police used force against him and his supporters, and during the ensuing scuffle he suffered a head injury which required stitches.
Urging the police to release all the videos of lathi-charge on them, Singh in a tweet said, the police department always targets him.
The statue of Rani Avanti Bai Lodh, who participated in the 1857 revolt against the British, at Jumerat Bazar was damaged twice earlier allegedly by vandals. Police said that it was the BJP MLA and his supporters who first pelted stones at police due to which they had to lathicharge.
MLA Raja singh hit himself with a stone on his head and caused a self inflicted injury on his head and is falsely alleging that police has caused this injury.
