Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, and a host of central leaders attended the swearing-in ceremony of Saha and his council of ministers that was held at the iconic Vivekanenda Stadium. PM Modi reached the venue in Agartala by 10.45 am. Along with Saha, nine other ministers were also sworn in.

“Manik Saha will take oath as the chief minister of the state for the second time at the Vivekananda ground. The PM will participate in the programme,” BJP Tripura unit chief spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty said.

“This is the first time that any anti-Left government has retained power in the northeastern state in the past three decades. We hope the BJP 2.0 government will meet the aspirations of the people,” Chakraborty said.

In 1988, the Congress-TUJS defeated the Left in the border state and formed the government, but it lost to the Communists in 1993.

The Tripura Assembly election results were announced on Thursday. The BJP won 32 seats in the 60-member House in the recent assembly elections in Tripura, while its ally IPFT (Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura) managed to secure one seat.

Saha met the Governor in Agartala on March 6, two hours after he was elected leader at the joint legislature party meeting of BJP and the IPFT. The Governor invited him to be sworn in as the 12th chief minister of the state.

Meanwhile, Tripura Congress and the Left had decided to boycott the oath-taking ceremony, citing post-poll violence.

At least eight people were injured in post-poll violence in Tripura, police had said on Saturday. Twenty people had been arrested in connection with the post-poll violence incidents in the state, the police had added.
