A case of murder has been registered by Mangolpuri Police and all the four accused, identified as Nasruddin, Islam, Zahid and Mehtab, have been arrested, said S Dhama, Additional DCP, Outer district, Delhi Police.

The family of the deseased claimed that Rinku had a dispute with one Nasruddin, who lived in the neighbourhood, over some religious remarks a few days ago. On Wednesday night, Nasruddin and three others forced their way inside the house and stabbed Rinku in the back, they claimed.

While police said the argument was over a food business rivalry, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), which is running a Ram Mandir donation drive, claimed Sharma was killed for collecting funds for the temple.

"So far, during investigation, it has surfaced that the quarrel started during a birthday party over shutting down of a restaurant. All persons are known to each other and live in the same locality. Any other motive alluded to this incident is factually wrong," said Additional DCP (Outer Delhi).

However, Rinku’s brother Manu Sharma said they did not own any restaurant. "My brother had gone to a birthday party. He was chased back on his return, dragged outside the house and stabbed. We don’t have any food shop. They even fought with us after we went for donation drive for Ram Mandir on August 5," Sharma said. On August 5 last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Speaking to India Today, Rinku’s mother said, "I couldn’t save him. He was the only earning member of the family." A huge crowd had gathered at Mangolpuri polcice station following the incident and cops have been placed on alert to avoid any flare up.

The VHP, in a statement, claimed Rinku was killed as he was collecting donations for Ram Mandir. "The administration...should ensure strictest punishment to the culprits," said VHP joint general secretary Surendra Jain.
