Bangalore, June 28, 2013: A 21-year-old girl in Bangalore, Sandhya Kamal, was manhandled for refusing to copy in an exam. Sandhya was only trying to write her MA exams last week, when she was dragged out and threatened after her father took pictures.
Sandhya is passionate about English literature, Shakespeare and poetry. But, Sandhya was taken aback last week while appearing for her Masters exams. She was shocked to see candidates cheating for the Karnataka state Open University Exams.
Sandhya was only trying to write her MA exams last week, when she was dragged out and threatened after her father took pictures.
"Ten minutes into the exam, the invigilator came in and said we had to give Rs 500 as a hall expenses, and I said what is that entitled for exactly. He said we are helping you so you have to pay us for that and said now you can use your text books and open your text books and start using them and everyone else around me was very happy and started opening there textbooks and started writing their papers by looking at it," Sandhya said.
Sandhya told her parents about the open copying, who could not believe. Horrified, Sandhya’s father clicked pictures inadvertently risking her life. "I saw these four boys from the institute, one of them grabbed my hand. When I was a feet away from the car, I turned around, but three others surrounded me and started dragging me back towards the college. The traffic came to a stand-still. There was a lorry, which I tried to hold on to, to try to push them away, but nothing worked. They took me to the lane towards the college and by that time everyone on the road and the two constables came in and stopped them," she recounted.
A complaint has now been registered with the university and the local police. Studying a subject and getting a degree have become two different things, going by the mass copying that has obviously been allowed by officials at different exam centres and of course, the quality of graduates from this university will forever be suspect.
