Indore, Aug 23, 2021: A group of people thrashed and abused a youth in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, accusing him of molesting women under the pretext of selling bangles. A video of the incident has been widely circulated on social media.

In the video, several men can be seen beating the bangle seller, throwing his wares on the ground and hurling expletives at him. Some of the attackers also snatched money from the victim.

After the video went viral, Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Imran Pratapgarhi attacked the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led government over the alleged incident and described the assailants as “terrorists”.

“This video is not from Afghanistan but from Indore, in Shivraj ji’s Madhya Pradesh, where a Muslim man selling bangles was lynched and his goods were looted. Narendra Modi ji, is this the India you wanted to make? When will action be taken against these terrorists?” Imran Pratapgarhi tweeted.

The Congress leader said he would provide compensation to the 25-year-old victim and legal aid. Imran Pratapgarhi went on to allege that the police were trying to cover up the incident.“I have spoken to the Indore boy on the phone, I will give the amount of money that has been looted from the victim and also provide a lawyer for legal aid. The police want to cover up the matter, our team is there with the victim continuously,” he said in another tweet.

Police, however, have denied the allegations of a cover-up and said they swung into action as soon as the incident was reported to them. However, some reports state that a case was registered only after people gathered outside the Kotwali police station demanding action against the accused.

According to the victim, he was selling bangles in the Banganga area when he was attacked.

“The accused first asked my name and started beating me once I disclosed my name. They also robbed Rs 10,000 from me and vandalised bangles and other material that I was carrying,” the victim said in his complaint to the police.

A FIR against unknown persons has been registered on the basis of the victim’s complaint after verifying the veracity of the video. Efforts are on to identify the assailants from the video.

“We have registered a case as per the complainant and are investigating but we would like to urge people not to react to social media posts that are communal in nature. At times incidents that have nothing to do with Indore are ascribed to the city. We are also keeping a watch in such social media posts,” Indore East SP Ashutosh Bagri told India Today.
