Bengaluru: Muslims protest against right-wing leader’s remark on Prophet Mohammed

Bengaluru, Dec 12, 2015: A massive protest by thousands of Muslims in Bengaluru against alleged derogatory remarks made against Prophet Mohammed by a leader of a right-wing organization in Uttar Pradesh resulted in a massive traffic problem in Bengaluru on Friday evening.

 

The eastern part of Bengaluru went into gridlock for over three hours on Friday evening as nearly 20,000 Muslim protestors marched to the Khuddus Saheb Idgah Maidan on the Nandidurga Road to protest remarks made by right wing leader Kamalesh Tiwari in Uttar Pradesh.

One set of protesters gathered near Byatarayanapura on the busy Mysuru Road around 4 pm and marched in a procession to the Town Hall throwing traffic on the Mysuru Road out of gear for a few hours. A second set of protestors numbering nearly 20,000 gathered at the Khuddus Saheb ground from Muslim dominated areas in East Bengaluru.

“There were traffic jams on various roads in the East Bengaluru and all our personnel were deployed to clear them,” Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) MA Saleem said. Law and order police officials said that the protest was peaceful and no untoward incidents were reported in the city.

“Muslims held a meeting to condemn statements made by one Kamalesh Tiwari. No violence took place. They had a meeting at the Town Hall in the afternoon and another meeting at the Idgah Maidany,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (East division) N Satheesh Kumar said on Friday evening as the traffic gridlock continued.
