Bengaluru, November 14, 2024: Swift action by police personnel posted at Richmond Junction saved the life of a man who was allegedly attempting to end his life by jumping off the flyover on Wednesday evening.
A police sub-inspector and the head constable from the Ashoknagar traffic police station were posted at the junction when they heard commotion on top of the flyover around 6:45 pm.
The man, aged 37, first threw his phone down, which caught the attention of police, who then heard a woman’s cries from above. Harishkumar B M, the PSI and Lokesh D G, the head constable, swung into action, with the latter getting to the flyover on the Cobra immediately to stop the man from jumping off.
Meanwhile, the PSI called the Hoysala, who arrived within minutes of the incident and took the family to the law and order police station for inquiry.
“This man was in a car with his wife and her brother. Since the evening peak hour traffic was slow, we presume that he was able to get out of the car quickly and get to the edge of the flyover. Bystanders did not want to get involved because some people believed he was a thief who snatched someone’s phone and was fleeing,” said a senior officer from the station.
It was found that the man was apparently undergoing treatment for a mental illness at Nimhans and was discharged on Wednesday.
