Bengaluru, Sep 06, 2022: A 23-year-old woman died due to electrocution near the Whitefield area in Bengaluru, which is besieged by severe waterlogging woes brought on by heavy rains earlier this week.
The deceased, identified as Akhila, accidentally came in contact with a live electric pole when she was returning home on her scooty on Monday night.
Akhila got off her scooty near Mayura Bakery where a stretch of the road was waterlogged. While towing the two-wheeler through the knee-deep water, she lost her balance. She tried to right herself by grabbing onto an electric pole, but got electrocuted.
The victim was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Akhila’s family members have blamed negligence by civic authorities and the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) for her death.
This was the first death reported in the IT hub, which has been severely impacted by an overnight downpour that caused lakes and stormwater drains to overflow and inundate low-lying areas.
Water-logging in localities like Rainbow Drive layout, Sunny Brooks Layout, some areas on Sarjapur Road were to such an extent that tractors and boats were used to ferry students and office goers in the morning.
Rains have battered many parts of the city like Whitefield, Indiranagar, Kengeri, R R Nagar, Bommanahalli, Marathalli, and Mahadevapura.
