Bengaluru reported 444 rape cases between 2021-2023, numbers increased annually

Bengaluru, Feb 27, 2024: From 2021 to 2023, 444 rape cases were reported in Bengaluru and the numbers increased every year, revealed Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara.

He was providing the figures for the crimes committed against women in Bengaluru at the Karnataka Legislative Council in response to a question raised by Congress MLC Nagaraj Yadav.

 

As many as 116 cases under IPC Section 376 (Punishment for rape) were registered in 2021 and the number increased to 152 cases in 2022 and further to 176 in 2023, Parameshwara informed.

The figure for molestation cases was even higher, with a total of 2,439 incidents reported over the last three years.

The cases under IPC 354 (assault or criminal force on woman to outrage her modesty) showed an annual increase, with 573 cases in 2021, 731 in 2022, and 1,135 in 2023.

The city also recorded 108 cases under IPC Sections 294 (Obscene acts and songs) and 509 (insult to woman’s modesty) over the three years.

Further, 80 cases of dowry death, 2,696 cases of dowry harassment, 1,698 cases of domestic violence and 445 cases of illegal trafficking were also reported.

After sharing the data, G Parmeshwar said the state government is taking precautionary measures to control crimes against women in the city.

He said the government has implemented a helpline number - 112 - so police can reach any spot in seven to eight minutes.

"I took our police on a trip to London to visit the London Metro Police. Their response time is 5 minutes. We are modelling the response here based on the system there," said the minister.

The Home Minister said Rs 665 crore was spent under the Nirbhaya Fund to set up cameras to ensure security.

"Bengaluru alone has 4,500 to 5,000 cameras. Overall, the state has 7,500 cameras, so we can monitor happenings from the control rooms," said Parmeshwar.

Apart from 444 rape cases reported between 2021-2023 in Bengaluru, the city also witnessed a significant hike in molestation, dowry, domestic violence and illegal trafficking incidents.
