Beniwal sacked as Mizoram governor

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Aug 7, 2014:  Mizoram Governor Kamla Beniwal, whose tenure in Gujarat saw confrontations with Narendra Modi, was sacked on Wednesday night, just two months before her term ends in the Raj Bhavan.

Kamla BeniwalThe sacking order of 87-year-old Beniwal came on a day she completed her first month in Mizoram Raj Bhavan after her transfer from Gujarat on July 6. In Gujarat, she had served four years and eight months from November 27, 2009. She was appointed governor first in Tripura on October 15, 2009 by the UPA government.

“The President has directed that Kamla Beniwal shall cease to hold the office of the Governor of Mizoram and has appointed V K Duggal, Governor of Manipur, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Mizoram, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements for the office of the Governor of Mizoram are made," a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said.

With this sacking, five states, including Karnataka, do not have full-time governors. Before Beniwal, the NDA government led by Modi had sacked Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Virendra Kataria, another UPA appointee, last month.
