Bhopal, April 26: Two people were confirmed dead by late Friday evening in the Kasturba hospital ward ceiling collapse. The ceiling of the women’s ward of the BHEL-run hospital had collapsed at around 5.00 pm on Friday.
Between 5 to 10 people are still believed to be trapped under the debris. Several people have been rescued. All of them are said to be safe, reporting only minor injuries.
Around 20-25 people were inside the ward when the ceiling collapsed. The hospital records listed 14 patients. The rest were attendants.
The Bhopal IGP said that the 350-bed hospital was old and this perhaps led to the collapse.
Kasturba hospital, one of the biggest and oldest hospitals in Bhopal city, provides free treatment to BHEL employees.
Bhopal Mayor Krishna Gaur has said a probe will be conducted. "Our primary concern is evacuation of patients and rescue of those trapped under the debris," she added.
Meanwhile, CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan tweeted, "Saddened to learn about Kasturba Hospital accident. I pray for the victims and giving immediate relief of Rs 50000 to every seriously injured."
