New Delhi, Nov 5, 2015: Bihar has voted in its toughest political battle and the results are set to be declared on November 8. The parties went all out with months of electioneering to reach out to the remotest of voters across the state. While there were many stakeholders, the battle was centred around two faces – Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

With the results still awaited, here’s a poll of polls, with the numbers of the various exit polls conducted by different agencies.

Three exit polls have predicted a close fight between the BJP-led NDA and the grand alliance in the Bihar assembly elections, with India Today-Cicero predicting 120 seats for the NDA, 117 for the JDU-RJD combine and giving 6 to ‘Others’.

C Voter predicted 111 seats for the NDA, gave 122 and JDU-RJD and 10 to ‘Others’. News Nation predicted 115-119 seats for NDA, 120-124 for JDU-RJD and 3-5 for ‘Others’

Elections were held across five phases, from 12 October to 5 November, for a total of 243 seats in the Bihar assembly. More than 6.7 crore voters were eligible to choose from a total of 3,450 candidates.

The polls were bitterly fought between the Nitish Kumar-led Grand Alliance and the NDA - comprising the BJP, Lok Janshakti Party, Rashtriya Lok Samta Party and Hindustani Awam Morcha.

The Bihar assembly election is seen as an indicator of the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who led the NDA campaign. The alliance did not project a chief ministerial candidate during the campaign, deciding instead to peg its chances on Modi’s popularity.

The campaign was highly polarised, with the BJP bringing up issues like cow slaughter and chief minister Kumar pitching it as a Bihar vs Bahari( outsider) contest.
