Budget makes up for AP split losses

New Delhi, July 11, 2014:  The BJP-led government has proposed several new institutions in Andhra Pradesh, in an apparent move to compensate for its losses after the state of Telangana was carved out of it.

arunFinance Minister Arun Jaitley, who presented the Union Budget 2014-15 on Thursday, proposed setting up of a new Indian Institute of Technology, an Agriculture University and a National Academy for Custom and Excise in Andhra Pradesh.

He added that a proposal to set up an institution like All India Institute for Medical Science in Andhra Pradesh was also under the consideration by the government.
He also proposed setting up of a Horticulture University in Telangana.

Narendra Modi government’s maiden Budget was also the first for Telangana and the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh.

“My government is committed to addressing the issues pertaining to the development of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act, 2014,” said Jaitley during the Budget speech.

“Provision has been made by various ministries and departments to fulfil the obligation of the Union government for both states,” he added.

While the National Academy for Custom and Excise will come up in Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh, the locations for the new IIT, AIIMS-like institution and the Agriculture University are yet to be finalised. The location of the proposed Horticulture University in Telangana too has not yet been decided upon.

Presenting the Union Budget, Jaitley also said Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh would be developed as one of the smart cities in the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor.
