CM-designate Jagan Mohan Reddy plans phase-wise nan on Liquor

Amaravati, May 27: Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister-designate Jagan Mohan Reddy has reiterated that the new state government will impose a ban on the sale of liquor in a phased manner. Jagan Mohan Reddy has asked V Lakshma Reddy from NGO Jana Chaitanya Vedika to prepare a roadmap to restrict the sale of alcohol to only five-star hotels and turn Andhra Pradesh as a dry state by 2024.

Speaking to reporters in Delhi on Sunday, Jagan Mohan Reddy said that he would not seek votes in 2024 if he failed to ban liquor by then. The next government will frame a policy to reduce the sale of liquor for one year. The policy will be reviewed every year until a complete ban on liquor is achieved. Another move that will hit traders that the government will maintain all liquor shops on the lines of Delhi, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. "To achieve the goal of complete liquor prohibition, the government should have control on both demand and supply. This can be achieved only when the retail business is also with the government, he said. We are proposing to reduce the number of shops in a phased manner in the next five years so as to avoid any legal problems, the government should have complete ownership," Lakshma Reddy was quoted as saying. Jagan Mohan Reddy also alleged that there was a big land scam in new state capital Amaravati as his predecessor N Chandrababu Naidu had resorted to "insider trading". He said Naidu and his "benamis" (proxies) purchased vast tracts of lands at throwaway prices in Amaravati by misleading people that the state capital will come up at other places.
