CPCB urges southern states to unite on air pollution battle

Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, March 21, 2025: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has advised the authorities of southern states, including Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, to hold a joint meeting with neighbouring states to address transboundary air quality issues.

Sources told DH that the move is part of the central authority’s push to develop a regional action plan, following the recent drive to implement state-level action plans to combat air pollution. The regional plan envisions different states and Union Territories working together to tackle the problem.

The CPCB recently held a meeting with representatives of the State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Kerala, along with the Pollution Control Committee of the Union Territory of Puducherry.

"All six administrations have recently prepared their state action plans," a source said, adding that regional plans are crucial given that pollutants from industries, especially thermal power plants, can travel long distances across state borders.

The CPCB advised that a meeting among neighbouring states be convened to develop a regional strategy for transboundary air quality management. In case of unresolved issues, states can approach central authorities,, including the Union Environment Ministry.

The CPCB also directed officials to strengthen the action plan by incorporating new rules, formulating or amending policies, and making necessary revisions. The committee decided to prioritise actions based on the major sources of pollution.

Interestingly, the National Green Tribunal had issued orders last year, directing states to ensure budget allocations for implementing air pollution action plans. Details of compliance with the order are expected to be made available during the next hearing.
