New Delhi, Oct 11: Krishna Poonia gave India its first gold in Commonwealth Games Athletics event after 52 long years when he won the gold medal in the women’s discus throw here at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday.
India, however, made a clean-sweep in the discus throw event as Harwant Kaur and Seema Antil also won silver and bronze medal respectively.
With Poonia’s gold India registered its 30th gold in the Commonwealth Games and touched the record of country’s highest ever gold tally. India had won 30 gold medals in Manchester CWG in 2002 which was till date the highest ever gold won the India.
However, Indian sports’ pin-up boy and Olympic silver medalist Vijender Singh suffered a shocking defeat in the semi-final of 75kg boxing event and had to settle for a bronze medal.
Earlier in the day, shooters Tejaswini Sawant and Meena Kumari missed the gold by one point in the women`s 50 metres rifle prone event and had to be content with a bronze medal at the Karni Singh Shooting Range.
The gold went to Scotland`s Jen McIntosh (591) and Kay Copland (578)while English girls Michelle Smith (590) and Sharon Lee (579) got the silver. Both England and Scotland were tied at 1,169 points, but England won the gold on the basis of 60 perfect 10s while Scotland had 52 perfect 10s.
Tejaswini, a world champion in 50 metres prone, shot 583 while Meena 585 as India finished with 1,168 points.
