Call to implement essential Church Act without delay

Kochi, Mar 13, 2018 : Speakers at a discussion on Indian legal system and Christian church courts, called for the speedy implementation of the proposed Church Act.

 

The ongoing controversy over the land deals by the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly has added weight to the call for the implementation of the Church Act, they said.

The Church Act was proposed by the Law Reforms Commission headed by the late V.R. Krishna Iyer, former judge of the Supreme Court of India.

The speakers at the discussions also felt that political parties had been ignoring the implementation of the Church Act for various reasons.

President of the Joint Christian Council Lalan Tharakan called for a mass movement to initiate proceedings for the Church Act implementation.

Felix Pulludan, moderator at the discussion, said the Christian church courts challenged the legal system in place for the country.

President of the Latin Catholic Council E. R. Joseph was among those who spoke.
