New Delhi, Apr 11, 2018 : Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today said the government cannot compel the army to buy indigenous weapons, after she opened a major defence exhibition that projects India as one of the major defence manufacturing hubs in the world.
"There would be more opportunities than challenges," Ms Sitharaman told reporters at Defexpo, the four-day exhibition to showcase land, naval and internal homeland security systems, which is being held in Thiruvidanthai, near Chennai.
The minister said she can’t "force the forces" to buy only Made in India equipment. While it would be nice if that were to happen, the armed forces were at liberty to pick and choose the equipment they need, she said.
