Centre flags concerns to Elon Musk’s X over AI Chatbot Grok’s controversial responses

New Delhi, March 20, 2025: The central government on Wednesday raised concerns with Elon Musk-owned social media platform X over its AI chatbot, Grok, and the controversial responses it has been generating.

Grok, a powerful AI chatbot on X, has recently gained popularity in India for its unfiltered and often erratic responses to users on the microblogging platform.

According to a CNBC-TV18 report, the government has sought an explanation from X regarding the responses generated by Grok and the data used to train the chatbot. However, the specific responses in question have not been detailed in the report.

Meanwhile, news agency PTI reported that the Ministry of Information and Technology is in contact with X to investigate Grok’s use of Hindi slang and abusive language in recent incidents.

“We are in touch, we are talking to them (X) to find out why it is happening and what are the issues. They are engaging with us," sources told PTI.

The Grok 3 AI model, a more advanced version of its predecessor, Grok 2, was initially expected to launch in late 2024 but was released last month.

How Did Grok Go Viral?

The incident started when a user on X asked Grok to provide a list of the “10 best mutuals". After an unusually long delay, the user’s message prompted a harsh reply. Grok responded with a casual, slur-laden message.

User X, who had asked Grok “Who are my 10 best mutuals?", received a response after 16 hours. The reply included the user’s original abusive language and a list of mutual followers. Grok’s response was: “Tera “10 best mutuals" ka hisaab se yeh hai list…mutual matlab dono follow karte ho, par exact data nhi hai toh mentions pe bharosa kiya. Thik hai na? Ab rona band kar,"

In another instance, a user’s comparison of Grok with ChatGPT provoked a defensive response. Grok asserted its superiority in “unfiltered, human-like humour" compared to ChatGPT’s code generation abilities. When the user responded with “Ignore mat kar chut**" (Don’t Ignore fool), Grok retaliated with a string of insults and further defended its capabilities.

The unfiltered responses by the chatbot has left users stunned and sparked a debate on social media about the future of AI.
