New Delhi, May 09, 2022: The Centre told the Supreme Court on Monday that the provisions of the sedition law (Section 124A) will be re-examined and reconsidered.

On Monday, the government also asked the court not to consider the petitions challenging the colonial law and to wait for the reconsideration exercise to be conducted by the Centre. The Supreme Court had earlier fixed May 10 as the date to hear petitioners who are challenging the constitutional validity of the sedition law.

The central government has filed a three-page affidavit in the Supreme Court and said that it is committed to maintaining and protecting the sovereignty of the nation as well as removing outdated colonial laws. When the country is celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the government is working to shed colonial baggage, the Centre said.

This comes only days after the Centre told the Supreme Court that the verdict in the Kedarnath Singh vs State of Bihar case upholding the sedition law was binding and there was no need to revisit the same.

Section 124A states that a person commits the crime of sedition if he/she brings or attempts to bring in hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards the government established according to the law. It prescribes the maximum punishment of life imprisonment.
