New Delhi, July 20, 2015: Rahul Gandhi knows a thing or two about downsizing - after all, he’s seen his party dwarfed considerably in Parliament, said minister Venkaiah Naidu today. The acerbic remark was in response to Mr Gandhi declaring recently that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "56-inch chest will be reduced to 5.6 inches soon".
Mr Gandhi, the 45-year-old Vice President of the Congress, attacked the PM on Friday over his reforms for how farmland should be acquired for development. "There is no way the Congress will allow the land bill to be passed in Parliament; just watch," Mr Gandhi professed, adding the 5.6 inch barb.
He led his party to its worst ever performance in last year’s national election, accruing 44 seats in the Lok Sabha. During the campaign that resulted in a historic victory for the BJP, Mr Modi said India needs capable and bold leaders - endowed with a "56-inch chest". The totemic line has been mocked by Opposition parties who say India needs a leader with a big heart, not muscly pecs.
Mr Gandhi a few months ago coined "suit-boot ki sarkaar", a slogan that derides the government as one in thrall to crony capitalists. The government’s changes to an existing land acquisition law are made in that spirit, the Congress alleges.
Unable to win the Opposition’s support thus far, the government has used three executive and temporary orders to enact the new rules; but to be made permanent, the changes must be greenlit by Parliament.
The government points out that without the land reforms, India will be unable to unlock billions of dollars in stalled projects, and that vital infrastructure is at risk.
