Arvind Kejriwal: The man with a broom

Giant-killer Arvind Kejriwal, who defeated three-time Chief Minister and Congress stalwart Sheila Dikshit in the New Delhi constituency, is nothing short of a political sensation, and his personal victory can be compared to the maverick Raj Narain’s electoral win over prime minister Indira Gandhi in the historic 1977 general election.

AAP makes stunning debut, BJP short of majority in Delh

Newcomer Aam Admi Party today made a stunning debut in electoral politics by winning or leading in 27 of the 70 Assembly seats in Delhi and stopping BJP short of a majority in an election that toppled the three-time Congress Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Following the trends that showed that Congress was facing a rout in the assembly, Dikshit conceded defeat sending her resignation to Lt Governor Najeeb Jung and said the party will analyse what went wrong in the election.

However, it was clear a verdict in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Incumbent Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was leading BJP in Madhya Pradesh to an improved performance with the party ahead in 153 of the 230 seats. The Congress was leading only in 65 seats unable to avoid a BJP hat-trick.

In Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje Scindia was on the way to toppling the Congress from power with a spectacular showing with BJP heading in 139 of the 200 seats with Congress ahead only in 31 constituencies.

However, it was Chhattisgarh which is providing a photo-finish with the ruling BJP and Congress involved in a neck and neck race. At one time, both were leading in 45 seats each in the 90 seats available.

But when last reports came, BJP was ahead in 48 and Congress in 41.

Modi a big factor in Rajasthan win, says Vasundhara Raje

New Delhi/Jaipur: Vasundhra Raje Scindia, who delivered a staggering victory for the BJP in Rajasthan, today credited her success to the party’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, currently the chief minister of Gujarat.

"Modi is a very big factor.  People have seen what he has done in Gujarat," said the woman who’s likely to be the new chief minister of Rajasthan.

The BJP is poised to win at least 130 of the state’s 200 seats.

"This is the semi-final to what is going to happen," she declared , holding that today’s results portend a return to power for her party in the national election, due by May.

Ashok Gehlot, the outgoing chief minister whose government was besieged by corruption allegations, attributed the thorough rout of his party, the Congress, to a negative campaign by the BJP.

"There was no reason for us to lose. Our campaign was on the basis of development, but we failed," said Mr Gehlot, who is leading in his own constituency Sardarpura.

Rajasthan saw high-pitched campaigns by the top leaders in both parties. Mr Modi, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, and Rahul Gandhi, the man many see as his chief rival for the top post in the 2014 general elections, toured the state extensively.

The ruling Congress drew flak over its choice of candidates when it fielded the relatives of two politicians in jail in connection with the Bhanwari Devi murder case.
