New Delhi, Dec 21, 2023: Congress leaders have requested Rahul Gandhi to embark on a second ’Bharat Jodo Yatra’ from east to west, Congress MP KC Venugopal said on Thursday.
"In the CWC meeting, Congress president (Mallikarjun Kharge) initially told Rahul Gandhi that he’s getting opinions from party workers and leaders from all over India that he should do a second yatra from east to west," KC Venugopal said.
The Congress leader said a decision on the yatra would be taken soon.
His statement came after a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting during which party leaders discussed their strategy for the Lok Sabha polls, the dismal performance in assembly elections and the suspension of Opposition MPs from Parliament, among other matters.
While speaking about the CWC meeting, he said, "We discussed various issues. First is the last assembly elections results. Second is the parliamentary elections of 2024 and third is the current political situation in the country, including the parliamentary issues. CWC unanimously adopted their resolution. The general mood of the CWC is to sincerely and genuinely evaluate the result of 5 state elections."
Venugopal further said that the manifesto committee for the Lok Sabha polls would be announced within the next day or two.
The first phase of Bharat Jodo Yatra, which commenced on September 7, 2022, from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, covered a distance of approximately 4,080 kilometers before concluding in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, in January 2023.
It passed through 75 districts in 12 states in 126 days, marking India’s longest foot march.
With Rahul Gandhi at the helm of the Yatra, the primary objective of this mass movement, as promoted by Congress, was to unite India against the divisive politics of the ruling BJP at the Centre.
It also aimed to address other socio-economic issues such as unemployment and inequality.
