Belgaum, Apr 11, 2013: While candidates lure voters with liquor, money and other freebies, a Congress ticket aspirant from Khanapur constituency in the district has been offering personal accident insurance coverage for voters ahead of the May 5 Assembly elections.
“We have covered you under accident insurance policy, so do not forget to vote me in the Assembly elections,” is the prospective candidate’s appeal, say voters in Khanapur.
The Congress ticket aspirant from the Khanapur constituency is Dr Anjali Nimbalkar, wife of senior IPS officer Hemant Nimbalkar and a close relative of a former Maharashtra chief minister.
Dr Nimbalkar has been camping in the taluk for the past few months with plans to contest the elections. She started off with organising a ‘get-together’ of women. Now, she has been extensively campaigning in villages.
Under the banner of Dr Sou Anjalitai Vichar Manch, Khanapur, group personal accident insurance policy certificates are being distributed to voters in the constituency.
The policies, issued by New India Assurance Company Ltd, have the name of the voter, gender and most importantly the Electors Photo Identity Card number.
Each individual has been given an insurance coverage of Rs one lakh in addition to accident medical reimbursement of up to Rs 25,000.
The policy covers accidental death, permanent total disability, permanent partial disability and medical stay arising out of accidents, including acts of terrorism.
Now, officials have registered a case of violation of model code of conduct for distributing the policies.
Municipal Administration Minister Balachandra Jarkiholi, MLA from Gokak in Belgaum district, had provided personal accident insurance cover to his constituents a couple of months ago, much before the declaration of the Assembly elections.
