Constable shot dead, colleague injured in Delhi

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Oct 14, 2014, DHNS: In the second attack on policemen in two days, a 42-year-old constable was shot dead and his colleague seriously injured by three-four unidentified men in outer Delhi’s Vijay Vihar area in the early hours of Monday.

Constable shot...The assault took place very close to the Vijay Vihar police station at about 1:30 am, when the constables were patrolling the area on a motorcycle. The service revolvers of the dead policeman were snatched during the attack.

The deceased, constable Jagbir Singh, had left a job in the Army to join the Delhi Police as a constable in 2008. He sustained a bullet injury to his chest during the attack, and was declared dead when taken to hospital. He was cremated with full honours at his native village in Haryana’s Dagroli district.

Singh’s colleague Narendra Kumar, 42, was shot in his back and is admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The bullet has been removed, and he is out of danger. His wife Sunita spoke to him after he regained consciousness.

The two constables had noticed an auto rickshaw approaching in lane number 7 of Vijay Vihar’s L-Block, with four people seated at the back. According to the surviving constable’s statement, he and Singh signalled the auto to stop, but when the driver did not comply, they gave a brief chase and intercepted it.

The driver allegedly started the auto as soon as the policemen parked their motorcycle and approached them from both sides.

“The constables latched on to the moving auto. One person inside the auto shot Jagbir with a country-made weapon. Jagbir asked Narendra to rush to the police station and fetch back-up, saying that he would stall the criminals till then,” Vikramjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer), told Deccan Herald.

Narendra was rushing to the police station when he was shot in the
back. “Narendra’s injury was not as serious, and he managed to reach the police station and tell a colleague what happened, before losing consciousness,” said the DCP.

Jagbir, meanwhile, refused to let go of the vehicle, and was dragged and beaten for almost 50 metres.

There was not much headway in the case till late on Monday night. CCTV camera footage of nearby areas revealed “nothing fruitful”, said the police.
