Mumbai, Sep 07, 2016: In a mobile clip that has surfaced of a Ganesha idol immersion near Mumbai, a policeman is attacked and his head is held under water by a volunteer.
Nitin Dogade, in police uniform, is seen in a struggle with his attacker in an immersion pond. When he comes out, three more assault him.
The incident, which took place in Kalyan near Mumbai on Tuesday, has emerged more than a week after a traffic policeman was beaten to death in Mumbai.
Mr Dogade had apparently tried to tell the volunteers to be disciplined.
An attempted murder case has been registered but no one has been arrested.
There has been a spike in attacks on policemen in Mumbai; seven cases have been reported in the last fortnight. Uddhav Thackeray, the chief of the ruling BJP’s ally Shiv Sena, is expected to meet Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis this morning to discuss these attacks.
