Creators of Bulli Bai, Sulli Deals apps granted bail by Delhi court on humanitarian grounds

New Delhi, Mar 29, 2022: A Delhi court granted bail to the main accused in both the Bulli Bai and Sulli Deals cases on Tuesday.

 

Omkareshwar Thakur and Niraj Bishnoi, who allegedly made the Sulli Deals and Bulli Bai apps respectively, were granted bail on humanitarian grounds.

BAIL CONDITIONS

However, strict conditions have been imposed on their bail. They are not allowed to leave the country and must appear before the court when called. Additionally, they have to keep their mobile phones and provide their contact details and location to the investigating officer.

They also cannot attempt to contact any victim or tamper with evidence.

GROUNDS FOR BAIL

The trial court granted bail on humanitarian grounds and said that the accused were first-time offenders. Continued incarceration would be detrimental to their overall well-being, the court said.

Further, the chargesheet has been filed and no shortcoming in the investigation has been observed, the court said.

BULLI BAI, SULLI DEALS CASES

In July 2021, an app called ‘Sulli Deals’ was discovered by Twitter users. The app had the tagline ‘Sulli deal of the day’ and published photographs of Muslim women without their consent. It encourages users to participate in an ‘auction’ of the women.

’Sulli’ is a derogatory term used against women.

In January 2022, a similar app called Bulli Bai was found. The app on open-source platform GitHub was used to upload the photographs of hundreds of Muslim women without their consent for a virtual ‘auction’.

Both Omkareshwar Thakur (25) and Niraj Bishnoi (21) were arrested in January this year for allegedly having created the controversial apps.
