Cyclone Yaas to turn into severe storm in 24 hrs, 90 trains to Bengal, Odisha cancelled

Kolkata, May 24, 2021:      A deep depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm ’Yaas’ and is likely to turn "severe" in the next 24 hours before it crosses Odisha and West Bengal coasts on May 26 (Wednesday), as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Cyclone Yaas will turn into a "very severe cyclonic storm" as it reaches the northwest Bay of Bengal near the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts on Monday.

 

As Cyclone Yaas approaches Odisha and West Bengal coasts, the East Coast Railway has cancelled 90 trains running on this route. It is likely to cancel 10 more by this evening as Cyclone Yaas gains momentum before intensifying into a severe storm, Kaushalendra Khadanga, chief PRO, East Coast Railway, told India Today TV.

Currently, Cyclone Yaas is centered over the east-central Bay of Bengal at around 540 km south-southeast of Paradip in Odisha, 650 km south-southeast of Balasore in Odisha, and 630 km south-southeast of Digha in West Bengal. Cyclone Yaas will intensify into a "severe" cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours and "very severe" during the subsequent 24 hours.

"Cyclone Yaas is very likely to move slowly north-northwestwards, intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours and into a very severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours. It would continue to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach the northwest Bay of Bengal near north Odisha and West Bengal coasts by May 26 early morning," the IMD bulletin said.

"Cyclone Yaas is very likely to cross the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island around noon of May 26 as a very severe cyclonic storm," a bulletin from the IMD said.
